Eating out – Britain’s favourite pastime

Eating out is something of an obsession with Brits. People in the UK spend a lot of time dining in restaurants, and almost as much thinking about where to eat. According to a 2017 survey from VoucherCodes.co.uk, Brits eat out twice each a week on average. They will spend an enormous £288,000 on restaurant meals during their lifetime. Eating out is most definitely Britain’s number one pastime.

What is Britain’s favourite restaurant meal?

Meerkat meals carried out a study of dining habits in 2018. They found that most people visit the same restaurants when they eat out. The study ranked people’s preferred cuisine choices. The top four are:

  1. Pub food (pie, steak, fish and chips, and so on)
  2. Italian
  3. Chinese
  4. Indian

People spend around 25 minutes deciding where to eat. Half of those said that the pain of choosing where to eat takes the fun out of the restaurant experience. A lot of time can be saved if you’ve got great restaurants on your doorstep. The time saved in trying to find a good place to eat makes for a more enjoyable experience in the best restaurants in London.

Southall – where some of the best restaurants in London are on the doorstep

Residents in Southall are spoilt for choice when it comes to great restaurants. All the top cuisine picks are catered for. Here is the pick of the bunch, as reviewed by diners on TripAdvisor.

·      The Plough

This Fuller’s pub is steeped in history, offering excellent home-cooked food and fine cask ales. It’s a family friendly pub, with daily special to whet the appetite of all. Recommended in the Good Beer Guide, the pub is also approved as a Fuller's Master Cellarman.

Sunday lunches are highly recommended, and at only £12 are very affordable. On TripAdvisor, regular diner sidneysjames says,

Been going for years, great all year round, especially in the garden in summer and by the open fire round Xmas time – really good food and excellent service, nice guitar music too, child-friendly.

·      The Prince of Wales

The best of both worlds for many diners, The Prince of Wales offers traditional pub food and great Indian cuisine. Most people who visit come for the food, though the beer is recommended too. People rave about the Punjabi food on TripAdvisor. For example, Armscare says:

WOW! AMAZING PUNJABI FOOD. I could not fault the food – it was absolutely amazing. From the Fish to the mixed grill for starters. And the mains were fantastic too – got to try the chilli chicken – def a favourite.

·      The Scotsman

The Scotsman is a pub where you can enjoy watching sport on multiple screens while eating a great meal. It is pub food with an Indian twist, and exceptional for meat lovers. Gurinderd2013 says he has never been disappointed:

Have eaten here a number of times and have consistently had a delicious experience. It’s a pub with a very good Northern Indian food. At various times we carnivores have really enjoyed the food; kebab rolls, mixed grill, curry lamb tava, chicken bhuna, tandoori lamb chops etc.

·      Chaudhry’s TKC

Chaudhry’s began life more than 50 years ago. A restaurant doesn’t last this long without the food being good. Here you’ll find fresh, home-cooked food at affordable prices – averaging around £10 for two-courses. You can also combine your Chinese and Indian favourites here – two birds with one stone, and great news for couples and groups with different tastes. CRFL says:

“Brilliant food, great service. The lamb chops were amazing. The sizzling dishes added some drama to the meal and the sweet dessert thingy was delicious!”

·      Madhus

This is a great place to dine. The restaurant is decorated in a contemporary style, and is rated as a great place to dine with brilliant ambience and ‘lots of theatre’. The service here is often mentioned as being exceptional. It’s a fantastic place for parties, too, as hpipalia confirms:

We went to Madhus Southall to celebrate my mum's 60th birthday with family and friends. Khush, Franco and their team's hospitality was excellent. They were very attentive to all our guest's needs and ensured everyone thoroughly enjoyed the party. Needless to say, food was amazing and on point! Thanks Khush, Franco and the team!

·      Raunka Punjab Diyan

At Raunka Punjab Diyan, your eyes, ears and nose are treated to an authentic Punjabi village experience. The staff are dressed in traditional clothing, and know the menu inside out. Dining here is an experience for all the senses and one you are unlikely to forget. You’ll come back for more, without a doubt. Paul West says:

Possibly the best Indian food I’ve eaten in the UK… it justifies all the 5-star reviews.

·      Spice Village

An excellent venue for dinner. It is perfect whether dining with friends or family or out for a romantic evening with your partner. The food is mouth-watering, with dishes dictated by attention to aromatic spices and the need for authenticity in its menu. The service here is noted for attention to detail. DavideS says:

The Spice Village is a buzzy, super-busy restaurant which delivers on its great food promise, quality dishes in good variety, and amazingly warm and attentive service. Considering the generous portions served, the Spice Village is remarkably good value. And absolute gem, worth a small trip from all of the West London area!

And for a quiet night in?

For those who don’t fancy a night on the town, but would prefer to cuddle up on the couch in front of the television, what could be better than a taste of Italy delivered to your front door? Southall’s Spicy Tomato Pizza is the answer. A full takeaway and home delivery menu is available, and as ukseahawk says:

Thankfully I have never had a bad meal from this eatery, service is always great as well as delivery …Their thin crust seafood pizza is the main reason we keep coming back as it’s so lovely!
